Titanium

Yuri Gagarin's statue. 'Titanium' BBC Radio 4 drama by Anita Sullivan
50th anniversary of Gagrin's flight

If Yuri Gagarin had so much as sneezed on the 12th of April 1961 the first man in orbit would have been his training partner, Gherman Titov. But Gagarin didn't sneeze. A few months later Titov did launch successfully in Vostock II. He completed 17 earth orbits, slept, ate dinner, got space-sick but he's largely unheard of because he wasn't 'first'. This play tells their story.

'Titanium' is an original Afternoon Drama for Radio 4. It was first broadcast in April 2011 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's flight. Starring Derek Riddell & William Ash.

Produced by Kate McAll, BBC Cardiff.
